Asset recovery, done properly
ServerGear is the data centre asset recovery arm of PYCO RENEW LTD, working from our processing facility in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
Why we exist
Decommissioning is the part of the infrastructure lifecycle nobody plans for. The new kit has a project, a budget and an owner. The old kit has a corner of the loading bay and a growing sense that someone ought to deal with it.
What happens next is usually one of two things. Either it’s written off and paid to be taken away — throwing away real value, and taking on faith that the drives were dealt with. Or it sits in storage for two years while the residual value quietly evaporates.
Neither is necessary. Hardware coming out of a UK data centre generally has a market, and the data on it can be sanitised to a standard that satisfies any auditor. Both of those things are our job.
How we work
We buy the equipment outright, collect it ourselves, and sanitise every piece of storage media before anything is tested or resold. Working hardware goes back into service with a second owner. Whatever genuinely can’t be reused is dismantled for material recovery under our T11 exemption.
The part we care most about is the paperwork, because that’s what turns a transaction into something you can put in front of an auditor. Waste transfer notes, per-drive erasure certificates tied to serial numbers, and a reconciled report that matches the list you sent us in the first place.
What we won’t do
We won’t quote a headline number and revise it downwards once the goods are in our building. If the audit contradicts the valuation, we come back with the evidence and you can decline — in which case the equipment goes back to you at our cost.
We won’t knowingly buy leased or financed equipment, we won’t subcontract sanitisation to a third party, and we won’t put a drive back into the resale stream because it failed to erase cleanly. Those drives get destroyed.
Our facility
Rochdale, Greater Manchester
Everything is processed in-house at Unit D13, Fieldhouse Industrial Estate, Rochdale OL12 0AA. Nothing is passed to a third-party processor, which is what keeps the chain of custody short enough to actually audit.
Controlled access
Media held in a secure area under CCTV, with access limited to vetted, DBS-checked staff.
Test & audit
Goods-in reconciliation and functional testing, so valuations are based on what the hardware actually is.
Sanitisation
Dedicated erasure benches and physical destruction on site using an industrial drive punch.
Dismantling
Component recovery and material separation under our T11 exemption. Nothing to landfill.
Environmental position
Reuse first. Recycling is the fallback.
Recycling a working server is a worse outcome than selling it. Manufacturing a replacement carries a far greater environmental cost than keeping a functioning machine in service for another few years.
So our order of preference is straightforward: resell whole units wherever they still work, harvest components where they don’t, and only break down for materials what has genuinely reached the end. It happens to align neatly with getting you the best price — reuse is worth more than scrap.
